Can I use my insurance?

Yes, we are in network and contracted with many commercial PPO insurance plans, currently including Aetna, TriCare West, Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield of California, UnitedHealthcare, and Sante. If you have other commercial insurance, we are happy to bill your insurance as an out of network provider. They may pay some, all, or none of your $120 visit fee. We are not able to determine your co-pay or co-insurance prior to your visit, as this is determined by your insurance company, not us. They will let us know what you owe after processing the claim. But, you can expect to pay an amount similar to what a clinic visit would be. Unfortunately, we are not able to take Medicaid, which is any form of Medi-Cal at this time.

How much does it cost?

Your self-pay price for an appointment with a pediatric emergency expert is $120. If you choose to use a participating insurance plan, your insurance company will determine any financial responsibility you may have based on the specifics of your individual policy. Typically, you can expect to pay the cost of an in-person clinic visit with your primary care doctor. This cost will be for the video visit with your physician, and it does not include any prescription medication costs or follow-up visits, if deemed applicable. This cost is for an expert evaluation and recommendation – if your HeP doctor believes an in person visit to the emergency department is warranted that evening, you will still be responsible for the HeP visit fee.

How can I prepare for my telemedicine visit?

  1. Pick a private, quiet, well-lit place
  2. Have your child’s weight ready in case a prescription medicine is needed
  3. Have a flashlight – this can help your HeP doctor evaluate the back of your child’s throat if needed. It can also be helpful to take a picture of the back of the throat prior to your visit.
  4. Take a picture of any rash or lesion you would like evaluated
  5. If possible, for small children it is helpful to have an extra pair of hands – one to hold the child and one to hold the camera.
  6. If you have a thermometer, take your child’s temperature ahead of time.
  7. If you are able, take your child’s heart rate before the visit – feel the pulse in the neck or wrist and count how many times you feel a beat in 60 seconds.

Is Health-e Pediatrics appropriate for every medical condition?

Not quite. Convenient virtual care has its limitations. HeP is designed to handle non-emergency medical conditions for concerns you would consider going to an urgent care for, or illnesses and injuries for which you would make a primary doctor’s appointment. However, it is not intended to be a substitute for your own primary care doctor, who knows you best. If your HeP doctor believes an in-person urgent care or emergency department visit is necessary, s/he will guide you on next steps to take.

For life-threatening emergencies please call 911 or go immediately to the emergency department.
